The Lazienki Park in Warsaw

Lazienki Park and Palace is the place where more than half of the population in Warsaw get together on weekends for a picnic, leisure stroll in the midst of gardens, or take in the stunning view of the architectural gem that abounds here.

Lazienki, which means baths, coined its name from the most popular attraction in the park, the Palace on the Island. The Palace, which dates back to the 17th century, was built by Stanislaw Herakliusz Lubomirski as a private bathhouse. In 1792, the last king of Poland, Stanislaw August Poniatowski, bought the bathhouse and converted it to a private residence, hence the name Palace on the Island. 

Today, the park is home to many events, eating establishments, cafes, summer houses, lakes, and theatres. The major highlights of the park include the Palace on the Island, and Old Orangery, and the impressive Amphitheater. Set on 76 hectares, this is by far Warsaw’s biggest and most fascinating park and one of the loveliest parks in Europe.

When to Go

Regardless of the time of year, Lazienki Park will never disappoint. There’s always something on offer for people of all ages.

Spring and Summer

The park is always buzzing with activities and full of life in spring and summer. Birds singing from blossoming treetops, beautifully colored tulips, and stunning lakes where you can relax and unwind all make the park an ideal place to experience it all.

Come prepared with your own meal and a blanket. Find a perfect spot on the beautifully manicured grass to perch and enjoy a free classical music concert that takes place on Sundays at the Chopin monument.

Autumn

You might not experience the energetic atmosphere as you would during summer, but in Autumn, the park is indeed colorful. The green treetops in the summer have transformed into an eclectic mix of reds, ambers, and yellows.

This is that time of year when your camera becomes a valuable tool. Be sure to visit in the early hours of the morning or at sunset to capture all the moments. If you’re on a tight budget, visit the park in November and enjoy free access to all the buildings within the park.

Winter

While winter in the park may not be as colorful as with other seasons, the park still maintains its appeal. The snowy landscape adds a touch of beauty to the creamy architecture.

During this time, you’ll see the red squirrels in virtually every corner around the park, with their footprints scattered all over the snowy grounds. Make sure you dress appropriately as winter in Lazienki Park and Palace can be brutal. Popular winter event includes the Winter Evening of Light – a festival that showcases the rich culture and tradition of the country. If you are in Warsaw in February, do not miss this festival.

Things to See and Do 

Lazienki Park and Palace is like a paradise. Once inside the park, it feels as though you’re in a different world entirely. The park boasts many sights, including architectural gems and museums worth visiting year-round.

Plan at least 3 hours to explore this incredible attraction. For summer, you can plan a half or full-day trip because of the Chopin concert.

Old Orangery

Located at the foot of the scarp, the Old Orangery is a must-visit for all. Here lies the Stanislawowski Theatre, renowned for being one of the world’s few examples of court theatres built in the 18th century. In the east wing, you will find a well-decorated interior discovered only a few years back. Also, check out the servant living quarters and guest rooms on the west side.

Wildlife

Lazienki Park serves as a natural habitat for wildlife, including squirrels, weasels, foxes, martens, peacocks, and a wide range of bird species. One of the animals that people find interesting is the roe dear, a female deer that has spent over a decade living in the park. If luck shines on you and you spot here, try to get closer. She is friendly and accommodating.

Amphitheater 

Built along the bank of a lake is the Amphitheater. Initially built in 1791, the Amphitheater was a gift to King Stanislaw August to celebrate his reign over the kingdom. The unique feature is that water separates the stage from the audience area.

During the summer months, the amphitheater hosts concerts and dance classes for everyone. More so, you can catch stunning views of peacocks as they go about their daily activities. It’s a beautiful place to stop and take in the stunning views of not just the theater but also the surrounding buildings.

Palace on the Isle

The Palace on the Isle is the principal building of Lazienki Park. Once a baroque bathhouse, the building was constructed by Lubomirski, one of Poland’s finest architects. Remodeled into a neoclassical style building, the Palace on the Isle features an extensive collection of exhibits and paintings, and it attracts a large number of visitors annually.

Pavilions

Check out Heritage, an impressive gallery that satisfies art lovers with its impressive temporary exhibitions and concerts. Visit the Egyptian Temple, which houses the Museum of Scouting. And lastly, the New Orangery where you’ll find a beautiful garden.

Designed by Jozef Orlowski and Adam Loewe, the New Orangery is home to Belverde Restaurant, the most expensive restaurant in the park where top guns like Queen Elizabeth II, and Helmut Kohl – the former German Chancellor had been hosted.
